The head of the campaign office of the candidates for president and vice president - Georgi Parvanov and Angel Marin, is the former Chief of General Staff of the Bulgarian Armed Forces Nikola Kolev.
He was born on August 9th in 1951 in the village of Karadzhalovo, Plovdiv region. He graduated an electronic technical school in Plovdiv, then Georgi Benkovski Higher School of Military Air Force, Dolna Mitropoliya, the Military Academy “G.S. Rakovski” in Sofia, the Military Academy of the General Staff of Armed Forces in Moscow, and the Defense Resources Management Institute – Monterey, USA. |

He has also undertaken educational courses in the Air Defense Academy in Tver (Russia), the Language Institute of the US Armed Forces in San Antonio, the George Marshall Center in Germany, and the Institute for Defense Studies with the Armed Forces in France.
Nikola Kolev has 31 years of experience as an officer with the Bulgarian Armed Forces. He was chief of HQ at First Air Defense Division – Bozhurishte, as well as Chief of Staff of Air Defense and Air Forces, First Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Air Forces, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Bulgaria Army (gradually – on preparation, resources, and operations), and Chief of the General Staff of the Bulgarian Armed Forces (2002 - 2006). He was promoted in the rank of General.
He was a member of the political military coordination committee with the Multinational Peace Forces “Southeast Europe” (1998-2002), (2000-2002), the Military Committee of NATO (2002 – 2006), and the Military Committee of the EU (2005-2006).
On September 1st, 2006 he was appointed as an adviser to the Commander-in-chief on military security. He is a bearer of ‘Stara Planina’ order – 1st degree with swords, and of many other military insignia.
He is married and has two daughters.
