3. For stability in Southeastern Europe and European prospects of the Balkans |
President Parvanov actively defends the European prospects of the Balkans. He views these prospects as the most solid guarantee of peace and stability in the region, known as Europe’s “powder keg” in the past.
Georgi Parvanov has actively stood up for his position at all initiatives and forums within the framework of the Southeast European Cooperation Process, at his bilateral meetings with state leaders and at trilateral meetings (Bulgaria-Romania-Greece and Bulgaria-Romania-Turkey). It is his idea to have a four-country format instead of two three-country formats.

The President sets great store by Bulgaria’s good relations with its neighbours. The level they reached during his term of office is assessed as the best in the last one hundred years.
Georgi Parvanov believes that Bulgaria can and should assume greater responsibility for stability and cooperation in Southeastern Europe. In practical terms, this means more initiatives and active steps to deepen contacts and cooperation. In this respect, the President places particularly great hopes on the joint construction of transport corridors and other infrastructure projects in the territory of the region. |
