April 25th, 2004. Iraq. President Georgi Parvanov visits Bulgarian peacekeeping mission in Karballa in a moment when the situation there was quite tense. |
|
In 2003 the President tried to warn the National Assembly against getting Bulgaria involved in the war against Iraq. His concerns and appeals went unheeded and Parliament committed a military contingent to that country. Following this decision, Georgi Parvanov concentrated his efforts on enhancing the Bulgarian troops’ security in Iraq and the proper performance of the tasks involved in that country’s reconstruction and stabilization. The President visited Karbala in 2004 at a time when the situation there was extremely volatile. In his talks with the US authorities in Iraq and in his contacts with the US President, Georgi Parvanov arranged more vehicles and equipment for the Bulgarian contingent. |
