1. For dialogue and national consensus |
The first major commitment Georgi Parvanov made when he was sworn in as President was to work in the name of national reconciliation and consensus. |
January 20th, 2006. President Georgi Parvanov addressed the National Assembly.
He promised to do his best to free Bulgarian politics from polarization and crass confrontation, from the discrediting and demonization of people, social groups, parties and institutions.
This position reflected the conviction that the country’s development had been hostage to confrontation on subjects and issues of the past, to grave ideological confrontation as an end in itself far too long during the transition years. Governance through the maximum consensus – this is Bulgaria’s success formula according to President Parvanov.
This understanding finds expression in his ambition that the institution of the President should be instrumental in strengthening a new political culture and constructive conduct, act as an intermediary and a guarantor when complex social and political problems are being solved, seek compromise and consensual solutions in the name of the national interests, and thus be a factor of stability and prudent change. |

August 13th, 2005. On the verge of political crisis that could hamper Bulgaria’s EU membership, President Parvanov handed the mandate for the formation of cabinet confident that the third (and last) attempt shall be successful. |
