Parvanov: The choice is between adventure and reason
27-10-2006 20:13 |

“If the first round is a race and choice between personalities, the vote on October 29th is an original referendum on the way the nation will develop over the next years – whether we will go back to the times of discords, malice, and opposing as an end in itself, or we will prove that we can be united in this crucial moment for us, for our children, and for the nation. That is why the choice now is between adventure and reason”, President Georgi Parvanov said in his concluding address to the Bulgarian voters in the eve of the run-off vote on Sunday.
He expressed his gratitude to all the people that have supported him so far, but stressed that he would not accept support under conditions that run counter to his current line of behavior and to the principles of the policy he has conducted during his first term in office.

I will continue being a head of state to all, no matter how they have voted and whether they have voted at all, Parvanov stated. Addressing specially the people supporting the rightist idea, the President said that this will be a hard choice for them. But he convinced them that the president’s institution is not and will never be a side in an ideological clash between the right and the left.

Parvanov pointed out that he accepts some of the ideas of the rest of the runners for presidents too – for instance, the greater commitment of the institution to the strategic issues, such as energy affairs, or more frequent sessions of the Consultative Council on National Security.

Parvanov added that with their vote the ethnic or religious mixed regions have given one more lesson of tolerance to the politicians. In his words Bulgarians must refute untrue patriotism at the run-off elections and consider very well today’s goals of patriotism: to treasure the Bulgarian heritage, to affirm our national self-confidence, and to defend our national identity in the highly competitive European environment, as well as to achieve a worthy EU membership.

On September 26th Europe chose Bulgaria; on October 29th we have the chance to confirm our European choice, Parvanov underscored.

This vote, in his words, does not refer to the road we’ve walked so far, but for the road that is ahead of us. This vote cannot be an evaluation for the character of the transition, which showed many mistakes and crimes. They can be neither justified, nor declared void by prescription, but this cannot be a reason for us to deny everything that has been achieved so far, especially over the last couple of years, the President said. He pointed out that it would be an adventure to start everything anew because problems cannot be solved via revenge and political vengeance.

This not even a way back – this is a way to chaos, to nowhere. Now, it is important that we choose reason and go on ahead – and I hope it will be faster and more successful, the President concluded and appealed to the Bulgarian citizens to go out and vote.
